Read moreIn terms of TV series, British shows are not to be left out. The narrative, the tone, the humor and the aesthetic are most of the time praised in UK shows. These 6 series are proof of it all.
Because Phoebe Waller-Bridge offered England the comedy drama it had been waiting for, it would be a shame to miss it. Fleabag is a mix of dark humor and acerbic lines. Phoebe Waller-Bridge leads this show, not only behind the camera but also in front of it. She plays Fleabag, this thirty-something single woman with a sharp tongue who lives in London. Fleabag's strength comes from Phoebe Waller-Bridge's power and her character who breaks the fourth wall all the time to address the audience. Joyous.
After Phoebe Waller-Bridge, let's talk about another brilliant creator and main actress: Michaela Coel. Even rawer, she tells, in I May Destroy You, the journey of a young writer who, after a drink-fuelled evening, tries to follow the events that led to the moment where it all changed dramatically for her: when she was sexually assaulted. A harrowing and sadly contemporary tale who fits into the #MeToo era.
Because Years and Years is undeniably a part of the best TV shows from the last couple of years, it is definitely a must-watch. Russell T Davies show follows the Lyons family over the course of fifteen years while the country is facing the rise of an extremist political party and the development of crazy technological inventions. Dystopian, nerve-racking, true to life and a bit alarmist, Years and Years is a show you watch without interruption but with a lump in your throat.
Since this British show made in Netflix is a delight of dark humor, you cannot miss it under any circumstances. This road trip through England follows two teens with opposite but complementary personalities. Alyssa and James run away together, far for adults and society. James is a (nice) psychopath who dreams about killing someone and Alyssa is a dauntless but touching teenage girl who says it the way it is. This eclectic duo is terribly endearing.
Inspired by the eponymous novel written by Sally Rooney, Normal People brings us to Ireland into the lives of Connell and Marianne, two teens with very opposite social backgrounds. Marianna is a discreet straight A student, Connell is a popular boy and his mother is Marianne's family cleaning lady. Even though everything seems to set them apart, the two teenagers are gonna get closer and start a secret but intense romance punctuated with sexual discoveries. A powerful TV series, as sublime as it is touching.
We couldn't talk about British shows without mentioning the brilliant The Crown. The show recounts English History and of the British Royal family, it is therefore impossible for someone who is passionate about the United Kingdom not to watch it. Era after era, The Crown shows Elizabeth II rise to the throne and her life as the British sovereign.
