The story is centered around Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, a knight nicknamed El Cid by the people. The period drama depicts the life of this Spanish Reconquista hero who existed in real life. The story behind this historical figure began in 1043, near Burgos in Spain. Considered as one of the true heroes of Spanish History, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar fought numerous battles until his exile and death in 1099. There's actually a statue of him in Burgos.

For the good of the show, El Cid's production necessitated a huge number of contributors. Seen as the Spanish version of Game of Thrones, the show hired approximately 11 000 extras, 200 persons for the production and sets averaging 43 055 square feet according to Sensacine.
