Un Paso Adelante
Broadcast on television in the 2000s, Un Paso Adelante remains a great classic of the genre. The Spanish show follows the wanderings of several young aspiring artists, as they enter the Carmen Arranz Academy, renowned as one of the best performing arts schools in the country. Juggling with dance, music and theater classes, everyone has to surpass themselves for a glimmer of hope to be recognized, one day, as a true professional in the milieu. A difficult journey, full of pitfalls, where stories of love, rivalry and friendship sometimes become entangled in complex figures.
Tiny Pretty Things
Released in December 2020 on Netflix, Tiny Pretty Things tells the story of a group of flamboyant students in a leading ballet school. Young, talented and ambitious, all are fighting to earn their place and do not hesitate to engage in the most unspeakable practices to achieve it. Created by Michael MacLennan, the series is adapted from the eponymous novel by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton. Comprising dance, thriller and romance, the episodes follow one another to the rhythm of broken hearts and bodies, casting a light on the cruel and dangerous aspects of an art as delicate as it is ruthless.
Flesh and Bone
Again, this miniseries does not praise the candor and purity of classical dance, but rather explores its dark and unhealthy wings, behind the scenes. Flesh and Bone portrays Claire, a dancer from Pittsburg, who joins the prestigious American Ballet Company in New York. Happy to have finally made her dream come true, the young woman soon becomes disillusioned when she finds out that her success in this environment comes for a price. Cruelty, sadism, jealousy, the daily life of ballerinas is far from being as rosy as it seems.
Shake it Up!
In a completely different register, Shake It Up! offers to mix dance with comedy. Carried by Zendaya and Bella Thorne, the Disney Channel sitcom tells the story of Cecilia and Raquel, two 13-year-old girls who dream of becoming professional dancers. Their wish finally come true when they get chosen to put their talent to work for a popular TV show named Shake it Up Chicago. A golden opportunity, which allows them to take their first steps on stage, but which also ultimately puts their friendship to the test.
The Get Down
Singing, rapping, dancing, groovin': The Get Down revisits the history of disco at the end of the 70s and takes the opportunity to trace the birth of hip-hop. Baz Luhrmann's series is particularly keen on taking interest in the youth of the Bronx, trying to make their way through this rising culture, in order to let their talent speak, but above all their soul. Some characters want to become soloists, other poets, musicians or dancers. Everyone has their own little flame, their goal, but in the end, everyone has the same passion.
Fame
Inspired by Alan Parker's 1980 film of the same name, the Fame series focuses on the lives of students at the School of Performing Arts, a New York performing arts school. Within its walls, many prodigies of dance, song, music and theater rub shoulders, help each other, admire and tear each other apart, around the same passion for the stage. Beyond the drama and romance, the script still leaves plenty of room for musical performances and dance numbers with fiery choreography. Enough to fully enjoy the exceptional gifts of these up-and-coming artists.
