These Scandinavian series that are worth seeing

23/01/2021

Long in the shadow of American and English-speaking series, Scandinavian fictions are gaining more and more importance on the international stage. Ranging from dark thriller to offbeat humor, here are six programs from the north, which have everything it takes to charm you.

The Killing

With Nordic screenwriters renowned for their sense of suspense and chilling thriller, it's no wonder Danish series The Killing (Forbrydelsen) has enjoyed wide international success. A crime drama centered around obscure murder cases, the program follows the adventures of the shrewd and insightful detective, Sarah Lund, played by Sofie Gråbøl. Each of the three seasons put forward a different sordid investigation in Copenhagen, much to the delight of Scandinavian neo-noir fans.

Deadwind

In the same vein, Deadwind offers terribly dark and disturbing investigations, led by Detective Sofia Karppi (Pihla Viitala) and her partner Sakari Nurmi (Lauri Tilkanen), of the Helsinki Police. Mainly focused on assassinations, the intrigues also stem from politics, corruption and crimes and offenses of all kinds that plague Finland. The series is currently developed ont two seasons and is expected to continue with new episodes in 2021.

The Rain

Let's engage in a radical key change with The Rain, which thrusts viewers into the heart of a post-apocalyptic universe, where most of humanity has been wiped out by an atrocious virus carried by: the rain. This Danish series tells the story of Simone (Alba August) and Rasmus (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen), a brother and sister who confined to a bunker for six years. Tired of their loneliness and struck by a food shortage, they end up cautiously exiting to explore this new world in search of other survivors.

Home For Christmas

Now, heading to Norway, the snow, the cold and the heat of a Christmas dinner. Home for Christmas has established itself as the ideal series to watch before the holiday season. Funny, offbeat and deeply romantic, this Nordic comedy tells the crazy story of Johanne (Ida Elise Broch), a young single woman who assured her family that she would come with her boyfriend for Christmas. She has therefore got only 24 days left before the fateful day, just over 3 weeks to find a lover. Hence, the countdown has started and promises its share of gags and tenderness.

Love & Anarchy

Still in a comedic genre, Love & Anarchy features a completely crazy love story between a supercharged mother and a rebellious young computer scientist. Like a Love Me If You Dare, revisited, Sofie (Ida Engvoll) and Max (Björn Mosten) challenge each other with ever harder dares, to the point of turning their personal and professional lives upside down. This Swedish series has fun with this sweet madness that inhabits all of us and which can sometimes take on big proportions when truly released. A program rich in twists and turns to watch with joyful candor.

Midnight Sun

One foot in France, the other in Sweden. Midnight Sun allows you to embark on Scandinavian series, while being in connection with French culture. The program centers on Kahina Zadi (Leïla Bekhti), a French police lieutenant, sent to Kiruna, in the Arctic Circle, to investigate the violent murder of a French national. In the middle of the Arctic summer, the young woman therefore finds herself immersed in a country she does not know and from which she must quickly learn the habits and customs in order to clarify her case.
