These series are led by a female cast

28/08/2020

If some shows are brightened by brilliant female figures, others are full on carried by an almost 100% female cast. Anyhow, here are 6 series that give pride of place to women by giving them a sublime platform.

Betty
Betty

Before Betty there was Skate Kitchen, a film leaning towards documentary territory. Crafted by director Crystal Moselle, Skate Kitchen tells the story of a crew of teenage skateboarders on the streets of New York. For Betty, Crystal Moselle kept the same group and went back at it again. Neither sequel nor spin-off, Betty is simply a sort of reformulation of its elder Skate Kitchen. The series is carried at arm's length by Rachel Vinberg, Dede Lovelace, Moonbear and Nina Horan. They address the difficulty for young women to evolve in the very cloistered male world of skateboarding.

Big Little Lies
Big Little Lies

Adapted from Liane Moriarty's eponymous book, Big Little Lies portrays the far from ideal everyday life of Californian housewives with seemingly perfect lives. In this show, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Zoë Kravitz, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern - no less - see their destinies shift and get closely intertwined when a murder takes place at a school charity event. Behind the appearances that must be kept up at all costs in this posh neighborhood, they are actually preyed upon by their own inner demons, in their own particular ways. The second season of the series saw Meryl Streep join this already high-profile cast.

Desperate Housewives
Desperate Housewives

Do we still have to introduce Desperate Housewives? Marc Cherry's cult series, Desperate Housewives portrays a neighborhood superbly embodied by Eva Longoria, Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman, where secrets do not last long. In 8 seasons, Desperate Housewives has established itself as an absolute reference in the early 2000s.

Insecure
Insecure

In the core of Insecure is Issa Rae. Producer, screenwriter, main actress and sometimes director, Issa Rae gives Insecure its unique flavor. The show is about two best friends Issa (Issa Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji) who don't quite think the same way. Issa faces a breakup after a long-standing relationship and a job that is low earning but done out of conviction, whereas Molly doesn't know how to thrive in a relationship and puts all her energy into building her legal career. Together, the two friends experience many adventures with Los Angeles as a background scene. As a bonus, Insecure benefits from Pharrell Williams' seal of approval and a soundtrack that appeals to hip-hop fans.

Mrs America
Mrs America

It's hard to talk about series with mostly all female casts without mentioning the youngest: Mrs. America. Led by Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne and Uzo Aduba (Orange Is The New Black), Mrs. America draws the portrait of Phyllis Schlafly (Blanchett), an ultra-conservative activist in the 70s, who takes the lead of a movement to prevent the ratification of an amendment which seeks to guarantee equal rights between men and women. Soon, Schlafly triggers a wrath in the feminists who then stand in her way...

Killing Eve
Killing Eve

On the one hand there is Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh), who has to hunt down a formidable hitwoman for the British Secret Service. On the other hand, there is Villanelle (Jodie Comer), the contract killer in question. As to why Killing Eve gets so fascinating during its first 3 seasons, it is definitely for the game that quickly gets established between Eve and Villanelle. The two women attract each other like magnets while one marked the other for death.
