Read moreWhile most sports are broadcast on television, fiction allows you to discover many disciplines by going behind the scenes. A real immersion in a world of courage, sweat and determination, which sometimes even lead you to get out of the sofa and get your swimsuit wet. Take a look at energetic shows which offer a new perspective on the sporting world.
A bunch of supercharged girls, pop colors, retro music and rock ‘n' roller skates, Derby Girl offers a dive into roller derby, a contact sport unknown to the general public. With Chloé Jouannet at the helm, the series by Nikola Lange and Charlotte Vecchiet, reveals the wings of this shock discipline, in which girls are not afraid of getting their hands dirty. They hit, they knock, they push, they dynamite, they scatter, they punch holes… No mercy on the track, but warriors who came to win. But while the characters are rough, they still display a quirky and irresistible sense of humor. It is then impossible not to get carried away by this enthusiasm for the field and the camaraderie.
Centered around a young baseball prodigy, the Pitch series tells the fictional story of a woman who gets to be the first female player to join a major league men's team. Under pressure and faced with prejudice, Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury) must then challenge her limits to reach the highest spheres of professional sport. An atypical and rocky journey with many obstacles along the way, which casts a new light on one of the most popular American disciplines.
Imagined by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, The English Game is set in 1870s England, in the early days of association football. The series then shines a light on the fate of two players from different social classes, who compete on the pitch to win more than just a match. Through their sporting rivalry, the two men take part in the democratization of this ball sport, which will become, over the years, the most popular in the world.
Delicacy, poetry and marvelous routines: Spinning Out is interested in high level figure skating. A real fine flower of the winter sports, with poisonous thorns: this discipline actually hides overwhelming expectations and ruthless competition. The series follows the adventures of Kat Baker (Kaya Scodelario), a young champion ready to do anything to achieve her Olympic dream. Among rivalry, physical and psychological difficulties, many obstacles must be faced in order to reach the top.
Filled with comedy and mind-blowing athletic performance, GLOW is the must-see program to discover the world of wrestling. Through quirky women with strong character, the series takes the spectators into the ring, for a truly grueling wrestling spectacle. Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, Sydelle Noel and even Britney Young lead this enraged dance, to the rhythm of artificial and choreographed violence. Enough to offer colorful entertainment and character.
For some, chess is just a Sunday afternoon game; it is an actual sport though. The Queen's Gambit offers a direct behind-the-scenes look at these trials of spirit, where strategy reigns supreme and genius reigns supreme. Scott Frank and Allan Scott's series focuses on Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy), a young orphan with a formidable intellect, whose unique vision of the game turns the chess world upside down. Despite a difficult childhood and destructive addictions, the young woman does everything to become the number 1 of the world.
