These Underrated Series Deserve a Look

30/10/2020

For some reason, some shows do not meet with the expected success in France. However, there are little gems that deserve to be known. A quick overview of the shows that we cannot recommend enough.

Chewing-Gum

While Michaela Coel had a very nice platform with I May Destroy You, fewer people binged the episodes of Chewing Gum, her first series. The crazy humor of the series is admittedly not accessible to everyone. Featuring Michaela Coel as Tracey, a 24-year-old Londoner raised in an ultra-religious setting, still a virgin, seeing Beyoncé as her idol, this sitcom is a succession of ultra-comical situations with sharp humor.

Insecure

In the United States, Insecure is a hit and Issa Rae is adored. In France, things are a bit different because the series is not as popular. Nevertheless, it touches on several primordial notions. Issa is a Black-American 30-something woman who lives in Los Angeles. It is through this prism that we discover her in her everyday life where friendships and complicated romantic relationships are intertwined, and a down-to-earth professional life because Issa has chosen social work rather than a lucrative occupation. In short, Insecure has all the ingredients to please comedy lovers against a background of societal reflection.

Broad City

Looking for something hilarious? Welcome to Broad City, a series that follows the adventures of two young women in their twenties on the streets of New York. Showing messy struggles and a mind-blowing daily life, the series featuring Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson (who are also the creators) is a delight as the two young girls find themselves involved in really absurd yet inevitably funny situations.

Ted Lasso

Change of course with Ted Lasso! This time, it's in the world of sports that we find ourselves with the new Apple TV+ series with unanimous reviews: the show is hilarious. Jason Sudeikis plays Ted Lasso, an American football coach who is recruited to coach a British soccer team although he knows nothing about football. Please note, this series is reserved for soccer fans in order to best taste the numerous jokes on the subject.

Atlanta

On the Western side of the Atlantic, Donald Glover, a.k.a. Childish Gambino, is adored. While he has also got his European audience under his musical alias, people in general are less aware of his attraction to comedy. After Community, Donald Glover gave birth to Atlanta, a series with a very special universe. The singer/actor plays Earn, the cousin of an emerging rapper, Paper Boi, who decides to take charge of his career by becoming his manager. Be careful, to appreciate Atlanta you should be rather open-minded and responsive to ironic humor.

The Inbetweeners

We end this short overview with a gem straight from England. Go on your way if you are oblivious to the typical British humor! The Inbetweeners tells the story of four teenage losers whose only concerns are girls and dismissing parental authority. The sitcom is hilarious and the characters very touching under a surface of losers that nobody likes at school.
